Welcome to Ms. Fontana's Counselor's Corner! I'm so happy you are here.

About Me

While achieving a bachelor's degree in family and child development from Montclair State University, and a master's degree in school counseling at New York University, I discovered my passion for working with children and families. I have held leadership positions at child care centers, schools, and camps as an administrator, teacher, teacher trainer, and counselor. I am have experience as an elementary school counselor where I supported the social-emotional and academic development of Pre-K through 5th grade students by implementing a multi-tiered system of support including classroom lessons, individual counseling, and group counseling, among other interventions.

When I am not at school, I enjoy reading sci-fi novels, playing the saxophone, and continuing my search for the best coffee shops around.

Counseling Philosophy

My counseling philosophy includes a person-centered and child-lead approach that focuses on the holistic development of children and adolescents. I resonate with Ross Greene’s postulation that “Kids do well when they can,” and feel that my role as a school counselor is to ensure that students are provided with the tools and resources they need to achieve their full potential. I believe each individual innately has all they require to flourish and my goal is to support students in their journey of finding that within themselves. I feel school counselors are most successful when they provide students with a space for self-expression and individuality while setting standards of respect and a willingness to learn from their peers.

I am passionate about creating innovative ways to incorporate social-emotional learning into everyday activities. This includes using empathetic and emotionally-intelligent language while talking with children and adolescents as well as larger initiatives such as working with administration and teachers to incorporate social-emotional learning standards into their curriculum. At elementary and middle school levels, I have facilitated classroom lessons and small groups to support students' developing social skills and self-esteem through sharing stories and experiences. At a high school level, I led a curriculum diversification initiative to ensure that students had access to materials that were both reflective of their personal situations and enlightened the unique experiences of others. Through the sharing of stories, I believe students become more empathetic and empowered members of their school environment and society at large.
