STEM Courses

STEM Lab

This three year course is offered to all students in Grades 6 through 8.  Each year, students build on skills developed in previous years as they identify and solve technological problems, design solutions, and work collaboratively with peers to manufacture and market innovative products.

Students in this course of study develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Technological design and problem solving
  • Collaborative problem solving
  • Corporate manufacturing and marketing
  • Self reflection and team building
  • Computer illustration and multimedia development
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Acceptable standards of safety in manufacturing laboratory settings

TV Studio/Media Production

The Franklin Lakes TV Studio Program presents concepts and activities that prepare middle-school students for involvement in varied aspects of television broadcasting.  Students participate in all stages of program development and broadcasting while working in customized TV studio and computer labs.  The develop language arts, technological, and design production skills via news, drama, documentary, public relations and advertising formats.  Students work on scripts and program logistics consistent with the pacing of  professional TV broadcasting as they produce the daily program, FAMS Live, as well as their own short films.

Course Proficiencies
 
Students are expected to develop and demonstrate proficiencies in the following areas:
  • Basic understanding of the historical development of television’s technology and its impact as an informational and entertainment medium as well as its potential for career opportunities
  • Ability to present clear information in proper verbal format.
  • Appropriate oral presentation skills both “on camera” and in “real world” situations
  • Competence in the preparation of TV programs in a classroom setting, on a closed circuit cable and web streaming
  • Ability to safely and correctly operate technical equipment used for broadcasting (camera, switch, audio board, lights, etc.)
  • Application of reading, writing and research skills
  • Mastery of technical vocabulary and processes related to the use of studio equipment for program production
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with peers and adults in the school and community and to reflect on ones growth in goal-setting, decision making and project management skills
