NJSLA Testing Overview

ELA & Mathematics (NJSLA-A)

NJSLA-A consists of three (3) units: ELA-Reading, ELA-Writing, and Mathematics. Beginning in Spring 2026, the English Language Arts (ELA) Reading and Mathematics assessments will be computer-adaptive. This means the test adjusts in real time based on student responses to better measure individual skill levels. Each student receives a unique set of questions aligned to grade-level standards. ELA Writing is not adaptive.

Test Structure:

  • ELA-Reading: 2 sessions (75 minutes each)
  • ELA-Writing: 1 session (90 minutes)
  • Mathematics: 2 sessions (75 minutes each)

Students work at their own pace, and testing continues across sessions where they left off.

Science (NJSLA-S)

The Science assessment remains a fixed-form test, meaning all students receive the same questions.

Test Structure:

  • 4 units, approximately 45 minutes each
  • Total testing time: 180 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

How can students prepare?

The best preparation is consistent classroom learning. Families can also support students by:

  • Ensuring a good night’s sleep
  • Providing a healthy breakfast
  • Encouraging a positive mindset
  • Arriving at school on time

Practice tests are also available through the state assessment portal.

Are NJSLA required for high school graduation?

The State of New Jersey is continuing to finalize graduation requirements for future classes. Currently, NJSLA Algebra I and Geometry assessments are included as one of several pathways to meet graduation requirements. Students enrolled in high school-level math courses should take the NJSLA assessments in order to keep options open in the event these assessments are utilized to satisfy High School graduation assessment requirements.

Please visit the High School Graduation Requirements on the NJ DoE website for updates on graduation requirements.  Additional information on NJSLA and NJ High School Graduation Requirements can be found on the Ramapo Indian Hills School District webpage.
