The Franklin Lakes School District believes that a rich experience and knowledge base in visual and performing arts is an essential component of a complete education. Providing a curriculum for our students in the disciplines of music, theater, and visual art is critical to their personal success. A foundation of rich educational experiences with the arts within the context of a K-8 school curriculum is key to developing appreciation and literacy in the arts in later years.
Franklin Lakes offers students a rich and varied music program that aligns with these beliefs. Students receive regularly scheduled classes for vocal music and theory complemented by a voluntary instrumental program for those who wish to pursue lessons. Music appreciation and literacy are key components of the program and are continually nurtured by skilled musicians and teachers. Additionally, students have numerous opportunities to develop self confidence as they participate in musical performances throughout their schooling.
Our NJSLS 2020 Visual and Performing Arts programming provides students with authentic, hand-ons experiences across the five artistic disciplines while developing a deep appreciation for the arts in recognition of the impact the Arts has on culture and students’ everyday lives.
Our pedagogy is centered upon the development of creative and critical thinking, social-emotional competencies, and intellectual and expressive abilities that will allow students to become active, contributing members of a global society. Arts education at FLPS is steeped in the development of artistic literacy and fluency through the artistic practices:
K-5 Music
Music is offered to all students throughout K-5 as one of their weekly special area classes which includes opportunities to sing, experiment with various instruments including Orff instruments and ukuleles. Recorders are introduced in Grade 3 as a formal opportunity to learn and perform an individual instrument.
6-8 Choral Music
Middle school students have the option to continue their musical education through choral music instruction that leads to opportunities for numerous performances.
4-8 Instrumental Music Program
After third grade work with recorders students have the opportunity to select an instrument of their choice to pursue to perform together with band or string ensembles in fourth grade. Optional Instrumental music classes begin in Grade 4 and continue through the Middle School years. Students in all instrumental classes have the opportunities to play and perform together in band and orchestra.
