very excited about tonight's presentation and I'm excited for several reasons I'm excited because the lies in an area that's near and dear to my heart my first a job was serving president Information Technology director and when I say almost as good I'm speaking of leadership I'm excited about the level of now of know-how and enthusiasm no she brings projects like these can I said this over and over and over in a variety of ways it always leaves me at all just in terms of the amount of participation that she inspires that brings this one to one laptop Initiative Program presentation to us tonight so I'm also excited would like to the typical exploration of the possibilities and an implementations of a one-to-one laptop initiative at least the ones that I've seen over the what do I mean by that teacher and what am I talking about I'm talking about practice and you're usually talking about the cost $100,000 do I have to say that unfortunately more district and not have suffered from the pitfalls of putting Knology in students hands and then seeing what happens watching One on poles the Franklin Ave Middle School I think we've done just the opposite of that number one the pleasure of seeing first-hand caged they're engaging in the recited and they're here tonight to present and ask for it Scott shifts and change an additional workload Community concerns Financial Peace that I identified with when I called putting the meat before the technology well that's the opposite of putting in the laptops for putting machines and kid hands and saying let's see what happens when that sounds exciting that means what if I 500 laptops  you go back and take a look at old newspapers or magazines reporting or online you know publishing's on on on implementations like that more often than not  here is Franklin Avenue Middle School as I said I've seen it first-hand  the success comes from putting the need before the technology I believe that our teachers are at a point where can't go too much further without having some additional tools  tinnitus tonight's additional tool is called the laptop  okay so you know I'll leave you by Jason please Thank You Bridget and Joe and you and Eileen James and Wendy Laura Laura Marcy Allison Julia Andrew Carl Regan Barrett and you'll see their last names up on the screen I don't want to drag you for all of that I put thank you and again that represents a cross-section what's cool theaters  in technology in Administration in among the teaching staff so thank you and again I thank you to all the fans teachers business be excited about it taking us to where we are and now I resent members of the digital learning today thank you good evening everyone I just appreciate the time to sit here and very briefly introduce who will be the stars of our show which are our teachers on Google really talk about what their need is and how much technology they use in the classroom on a daily basis and where they really can go from here the next step that they really needed in terms of deep in the classroom  back about a year ago January of 2013 Bridget and I had a quick conversation just about bringing it just that the technology into the classroom how often that we do it what's happening in the classroom and really get ready for future generations for the future of testing and we asked for volunteers to sit on a technology just to kind of navigate through things what has what has been done what can we done what can be done and how can we be better in certain things certain areas add part of that conversation then kind of evolved over time into what we have today which is a recommendation for a student once one laptop initiative at the these are the numbers of our digital learning committee Frank and mention all the first names on there as you look at these teachers this Crosshair of pretty much everything that happens in the middle school you'll see core academic classes being mention there you'll see Encore courses I mentioned up there as well as our special needs students  I know that's a little Uncle to see but as all of you know teaching his kind of evolving over the course of time common core standards 21st century skills Arc assessments teachers are asked to do so much more character education in the classroom just recently the governor signed the bill into who all that we are required to teach about social media in the classroom and teach the kids about Facebook about Instagram about Twitter all those different things and it what's a full on Educators and so teachers are not only expected to teach the Reading Writing and arithmetic but how you do all those different things who did technology including everything from day-to-day life as I spoke about before the common core standards or new and language arts and in math however the technology standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum standards are also trying to interweave into our classroom and you see those technology standards kind of interweaving differently in every single standards and their litter throughout those common core standards not on language arts and Mathematics putting everything the students do and this is just one quote that I think really epitomizes what students are expected to do and what teachers are expected to give to students so to be ready for college Workforce training and life in a technological Society students need the ability Gather Comprehensive valuate synthesize and report on information and ideas to conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems and to analyze and create a high volume of extensive range of print and not print checks in media forms old Andrew I mean that is a mouthful of words and a lot for kids to be able to navigate and we're thinking about kids are only in six x-ray 13-14 year-old kids that need to navigate through all these different things that they have through all the internet all the junk that's on there and the Flats on there and be able to decipher through those two both things and that's only going to happen through repetition and through research and that's through guided research are teachers once again not only with common core but we talk about 21st century skills critical thinking problem solving communication collaboration accountability cultural diversity all things that are students are expected to have and are expected to achieve along with those academic standards along with those common core standards and being AIDS it being able to answer we've that with a digital fluency understanding what is good and what is bad on the internet now fans teachers last year after we had this beginning of our committing we came to a realization that do you really want to push technology into the classroom as much as we can and every single teacher in their professional development goals came up with their goal to invest research and Implement ways to incorporate different technology in 21st century skills into the curriculum and student work so over the course of this year or student teachers have worked with our students to implement more ideas in the technology so what dr. Romano at said put the need before the actual laptop and so are start each have work to redesign their lessons have worked to align their lessons to the common core and Infuse technology into their lessons whenever possible or whenever and part of that is the valuation now certainly has put a burden on our on a Ministry to staff in terms of getting out bear and being in the classroom formerly so many different times and that's three times for every single teacher but what it's done for for us as administrative staff is get to see you teachers doing so many great things both with technology and without technology and I can tell you first-hand that aren't teachers have stepped it up in terms of using technology and I've seen so many great things and our next step is really for this laptop because I feel that the teachers are begging for it the things that they do are so unbelievably amazing and you're going to hear three or good morning three but your three three pieces of information for more teachers now who will just show you the great things that they're doing and how that could be even better if this laptop in the ship does does go through so with that being said I will pass it off to mr. taco well I'm Andrew Tuttle I teach 8th grade language arts here and I've been here for 10 years and over those last 10 years I've seen technology transform completely from you know a small amount of integration when when I was first here too if I could get those laptops in my room everyday they would be a part of my classroom fabric Jack which is why I'm standing in front of you to explain how that could be such a transformative thing for teachers are particular for me in language arts you two words when I start to teach every year is that I want to teach my kids to be fishing and effective Learners and I want to be efficient effective instructor these can please give me a chance to make that happen every single day with these kids it can't be understated what an impact it can have those two things become a reality in my classroom students the first parts file-sharing and I do a lot of file sharing Word file sharing back and forth play my kids when I'm trying to teach writing the old school to hand write maybe using, show it make changes you looking at papers and scribbles start to read them with file sharing as we have with your computer's we have the ability to share and receive through things like online forums blogs Wiki message boards that are built-in through Learning Management Systems all them give the ability for students to look at each other's work and give feedback to it immediately new laws for direct and immediate file sharing between teachers and students does a great program right now call airdrop if you have computers and I have a computer here you can simply trade files back and forth instantly as I do those revisions those revisions go up on the screen kids make adjustments out here we get the new file stop we see the revisions and the efficiency of that method of instruction is just unbelievable compared to how I used to go through instruction what is the every time every year I get a little better this process I noticed the kids learn faster and have better product  what is editing essential piece of all of this the ability to highlight chunks of paragraphs to look at paragraph balance to color code and have kids color code at their seed and have that bounce back in that in the active learning process take place not only is it efficient infected with the kids are so engage because they're so into those laptops how they learn how they function and it's very very natural process for them the electronic Learning System is it going to be a part of this to where kids can submit things online I can go and get feedback right away parents can see feedback as well they have an portfolio stored for them at all times anytime they want to go and access their writings all thing to do is go in access to files it's not like it's printed hanging out in my room somewhere we lost it everything's collected for them to be able to learn from their past is the past comments that I made to them and be able to make those updates as we through the year  the second component I want to talk about is the research and information literacy skills Sweet Pea know we have the ability to provide students with an awful lot of information one of them that you probably don't maybe think about right away it is the databases that that are going to be education not just here but in the high school and college we recently this year purchase one called epsco which is a major National Database and can be accessed through social studies class for science foreign languages for especially for language arts it provides you know. You'd content a major publish con it teaches kids how to use databases before they walk to that next level and have to do it in a high school or college level high schools use databases pretty much exclusively but we also still are going to have to be able to use internet search engines and then more access kids have hit a classroom with a trained professional to show them how to use that correctly so that it'll just Google and go to the first website they're still learning the skills that this agent a major part of what they can I have to figure out in terms of gathering research could it be something they can base their their arguments on so they have solid promises the last part that I'm here to talk to you today is also dealing with research and literacy skills it's going to provide get information on the computers and they can make electronic annotations they can store the information away they're not making pencil marks sing papers everything is is it stored so easily and then it transfers from the online research over to the outlines and the organizers soaps seamlessly in the kids are able to make that the visual connection from one to the next it's amazing the upgrade and organizational abilities I've seen when access to computers it's almost scary how natural they are added as a visual learner on the computer tell me when they go to write this essay and they start to master editing and formatting skills which are a major component on the common core standards are going to be the parcc testing for us that starts next year but I will turn the floor over to alright I'm James Claude second year turn fans I I'm here to talk to you very very quickly about multimedia multi-medium by the very definition is a combination of audio images some sort of interactive an animation truly is the way the students of the 21st century learn today in our classroom turn it down our challenges with our new and exciting ways you create it and very new and interesting ways how's the weather creating magazine covers like my student for the American Revolution reading interactive posters online to share what their classmates the options are truly boundless for our students applications such as deeply GarageBand iMovie they're all available for students to use and new ones are released every day and I would be very excited to see her students pioneered the field of tech in education excited to be a part of the process it's also important to note that with our new laptop initiative students will be able to record their voices on projects which is not only requirement of the foreign language make them hear about the Common Core testing as well thank you Van Heusen sign of a special education language arts teacher that fan did you talk about the reading component of literacy we have this full live brary of ebooks at our disposal and it's really difficult to use them for instruction in the classroom when students don't have that technology at their hands and I'm going to show you a little demonstration of how that you both can be used this is really important so students can have access to read at their individualized level and an entire library and they can be practicing those skills of digital reading on the types of reading those City on the parcc assessment and also the digital NFL encounter in future careers than in a digital world so here's a little just realized I forgot to enforce up to speed  what's the weather like elf on shelf collection of ebooks provide many features to enhance student learning that cannot be found in traditional print one of these features is that the ebooks can read aloud to students students can choose to have the text read aloud to them at any time Easter Bunny with a strange guy in a motorized wheelchair he had the scruffy beard and Afraid jacket which always smells like you wouldn't think he'd be cool but he told stories and jokes and let us play games in class  this feature Provide support to struggling readers and also serves as a motivational tool to all students to engage in the reading process this allows students to read and reread at their own individual eyes pace while reading in an ebook student scandigital notate and take notes in a way that I hard copy text will not allow for example students can highlight textual evidence using different colors to keep track of their thoughts character and plot now I'm using a yellow highlighter to highlight notes on the character Mister Brenner  this helps to actively engage with the text while locating textual evidence  now I'm using a pink highlighter identify evidence about the narrator the book notes feature keeps track of all the what's the distance highlight as they read the book notes feature shows the text that they highlighted as well as the page number this what students to collect evidence that will help them as they prepare an essay or Literary Response after reading  in addition students can add their own notes this saves the note the page number for the students to refer to later on this is much more efficient than traditionally sticking a Post-It note inside of a hard copy book when students complete their reading they can import all of these notes into a Word document which will help them build their essay or Literary Response using textual evidence this aligns with common core standards which call for students to use evidence to support their claims when responding to text as you can see the use of ebooks for digital reading helps to engage all levels of readers and prepares each student for the type of digital they will encounter on the upcoming Park assessments which require students to read and analyze text in a digital format it's difficult to prepare students for these 21st century skills without each student having their own personal laptop to access the Fallout shelf Library status shows a little sample of what these Electronics to do and it questions there is multiple choice questions short answer and open constructed response each of these requires a different sort of something answering those questions not might seem obvious to you as adults but her old kind of navigating the difference between how do I solve a multiple-choice question you don't know if in constructed response question is slightly different and we need to kind of teach students how to approach it to vote for Tampa with multiple choice question will teach them try to get an estimate of what your answer should be trying to figure out what you know what a reasonable type answer should be at your choices before working out the problem down your choices they can use all throughout not just math but even in other areas as well and they required to test little ID and then they would look on the board turn the board they would have five questions that would be called their do now for the day multiple choice questions solve the problem and then just put their answer on to the clicker soon as they hit submit the results are directly sent to my screen and I can see not only who has finished how they did for me because I can sell it on the spot what's the classroom and we don't need to spend that much time on that it's help for them because they can practice for toning their multiple choice test taking skills this is surface really well over the years as the technology on others but now we are facing a huge change as of next year as far as we understand the parcc test will be online this is a new shift for our students they're not used to taking a math standardized test online a little practice just handling field technology and Mathematics online all at the same time when we first heard this you know we thought okay I could probably handle your picking them up election on a screen that doesn't seem too much of a learning curve and then we started looking at the sample Forest Park type questions realize that the questions themselves in terms of the content were fine in terms of the technology a certain sense of Savvy in terms of understanding widgets and Technology they'll have inner electronic slide ruler whether kids need to manipulate that or they'll have to Dragon drop negative and positive numbers onto an electronic number line and I have to do it pretty precisely to demonstrate this we put together a little video to show you is this really simple question widgets problem students are expected to explore the relationship between inches and centimeters by using an electronic slide ruler they need to understand how Works in order to solve the problem and click on all of the choices that apply  drag and drop here are expected to place points on a horizontal number line by using a drag-and-drop they will be assessed on their ability to accurately place the negative and positive numbers on the line accuracy with a mouse  students need to be comfortable with trans inner knowledge onto the sphere would be for a student to know the content and the answer but stumble with the widget in the technology aspect in the past students could simply draw additional lines to help them spaced out there answer now you need to have comfort and with a mouse during test taken even slightly off with your dragon drop will result in an incorrect answer typing master  in the seventh grade problem students are expected to use their knowledge ratio in fractions to complete a chart they would most likely solve each part on scrap paper and then transfer their answers what type of each answer in the correct space should some of the answers are fractions students need to know how to type fractional parts Michelle as you can see you're the role of technology in terms of mathematic and test taking and sanitize test is changing in our classroom and the demands upon our students in terms of when they take their tests and and how comfortable they are what technology they're also changing the benefit to the one-to-one on a day-to-day basis for math would be just your spontaneity in differentiation everybody learns a different pace depending on the particular skills some students may have mastered the skill some might be struggling with it what the Math in Focus online textbook element it allows us the opportunity to assess students that have achieved Mastery in the particular skill War can you up and challenge them and invite them to work on the enrichment element that's included in the Math in Focus program so they can take that skill can go a little bit further as needed also would study island it allows us to going to testing element and they can practice the skill what particular skill the way it would be presented on a formal State assessment so they once again not only getting to practice typing or else we getting the wording of the sing and direct correlation to what they did that day and how it might appear later on in time I am artistic Street favorite teachers are already much more meaningful experience for then they're going to take a lot more ownership out of it and connect with the content a lot lot more  29 things that having laptops in classroom is that unlimited mimics what's on the teacher laptop it's just going to make that easy tween homeschool and other classes much much smoother they're working on a project and Comic Life in class they're going to be able to go home open up that laptop and have comic like the poem they might not have that ability right now you Smart Notebook software to create interactive review games and study guides and review materials for students they're not able to go home in like they are in the classroom and that's a lot easier should Niagara stuff into the two pocket folder class by class who's the papers or uploading Tour website or putting them on the new LMS they're going to be able to access them in a variety of different ways to make it too much longer well I don't know about you but I think our teachers are awesome I'm just going to wrap this up by what about the  we organize the group in December of 2012 and the gold was determined needs of the middle school students in regard to digital and online learning workplace Readiness and 21st century skills and online preparation for online after meeting and talking in the beginning of the meetings we've decided that will really needed to address all of these needs was alluring management system Silva learning management system isn't online software package, teachers can create and deliver content where they can monitor participation and assess students performance many people know about black Ford that's wearing management system so the committee look at 7 different Learning Management Systems we had specific needs that we wanted them to have the one that we chose one of them would be a collaborative we wanted the teachers to be able to edit the students work online we wanted it to have an assessment package that would mirror the what type of questions so we can give our students authentic practice in those tests and we wanted it to be able to improve the work clothes economy we think we found one that we did all of our needs out of the seven that weed  so the committee met eight times over the we started meeting in January of 2013 and we met a times we also the committee also when they went to their team Kings they informed their teens about the progress of the committee work that we had they brought back questions from their team colleagues to our meeting so we can discuss and work out we did three faculty presentations to make sure that the entire staff was surveys on one floor parents one for students and one for staff so that we could dumb gauge their position on the initiative and and it was in favor of a one-to-one of computing finishing it we did two site visits to middle schools that had already implemented once one laptop initiative and did that so we could see what they're how they delivered their laptops to the students what kind of best practices they they could show us and just what should we go through the classrooms and see how they were being used by the teachers  the teachers in the committee decided that we would like this initiative using Macintosh computers that are expectations of our students for the basic types of uses Apple devices provide when you look at the Moon Bloom's taxonomy Bridge you can see that the base represents simple drilling practice in our freaking was driving for the Pinnacle these objectives include analyzer and creating the teachers tonight have already demonstrated this evening expectations that we want to hold our students to yeah we're looking for the type of device that is available to deliver our curriculum objectives and happens to be the leader in that  I work until we need to discuss two responsibilities rules and expectations of acceptable use among other things but we are reaching out to neighboring districts to avoid in sand someone wants to buy from them and work through any kind of issues that would come up or questions that we have so we're looking forward to continuing to the lakes with Comprehensive academically challenging educational program that recognizes the individual needs of students in response to the change in demand for society thank you very much
