English as a Second Language

The Franklin Lakes Public Schools' English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is designed to support Multilingual Learners (MLs) in developing the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills needed to fully engage in content area learning. ESL instruction aligns with grade-level curriculum and is adapted to meet students' varying language proficiency levels.

Program Goals & Objectives:
  • Develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Support students in fully participating in content area learning
  • Nurture pride in each student’s linguistic and cultural heritage
  • Provide meaningful language practice in an interactive and supportive environment
  • Align instruction with WIDA standards, which guide language development in academic settings

ESL instruction is flexible and tailored to each student's needs. Multilingual learners receive instruction for a minimum of one period per day, either one-on-one or in small groups. The program follows two models of instruction:
  • Push-In Model: Students receive daily ESL instruction within the classroom setting. An ESL teacher provides targeted language support while students engage with grade-level content.
  • Pull-Out Model: Students meet with an ESL teacher outside the whole class setting during a designated time for language instruction.

*In New Jersey, ELL (English Language Learner) and ML (Multilingual Learner) both refer to students whose native language is not English and who require support in learning the language. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) uses the term "Multilingual Learner" to recognize and value a student's primary language.
