Art is an essential and intrinsic part of our rich heritage and history, and the study of art is an essential element of any well rounded education. The development of an understanding and appreciation for art and artistic expression develops our children's inner resources and provides rich opportunities for physical, emotional, intellectual, and creative growth. The visual arts are an integral part of the K-8 curriculum. Every child has the opportunity to perceive, produce, appreciate, and evaluate artwork through a regularly scheduled art program of study. The art program of study is sequenced to provide for an effective framework of learning based on the students' needs and characteristics. Art is important for every child, and is taught creatively and designed to help students develop a positive self-image, develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in their work, increase perceptual awareness, enhance their aesthetic appreciation and judgment, and foster their ability to think and act creatively.

The purpose of the Franklin Lakes K-8 art program is to offer every student a sequential program of art instruction that integrates art production, art history, art criticism, and the study of aesthetics.
  • Art production provides each student with an opportunity for discovery and transformation of ideas into self-expression.
  • Art history shows students how a professional artist can interpret the same ideas with different results.
  • Art criticism provides students with the opportunity to describe, interpret, and judge their own art as well as the artwork of others.
  • Aesthetics shows students how their own values and beliefs are reflected in their art.

K-8 Art Goals
  • To develop the students' aesthetic values
  • To encourage creative growth
  • To develop critical judgment through self evaluation
  • To strengthen art awareness through appreciation
  • To develop art skills appropriate to grade level
  • To value art as an important realm of human experiences
  • To become familiar with career opportunities
  • To become a tasteful product consumer

Assessment of student work in art is accomplished through a variety of mediums. Students are expected to complete assignments, take tests and quizzes, and complete assigned projects. Teachers incorporate many observations and discussions, as well as rubrics to assess student understanding. Students are assessed in many areas of artistic expression and understanding including drawing, painting, sculpture, graphics, puppetry, weaving, crafts, and design.
