Strategies & Intervention (S&I)/ SWAG Math, 6-8

Academic Intervention Supports for Middle School Students

Strategies & Intervention, 6-8: ELA & Math

The Franklin Lakes School District maintains a Strategies & Intervention program for students whose performance on district assessments and/or classroom performance indicates they would benefit from additional academic support in English Language Arts, Mathematics, or both.  The FLPS S&I program is designed to meet the unique needs of struggling students, recognizing that learners grow at varying rates.  As such, the program aims to provide instruction that supports learners in making growth toward meeting grade level standards and local benchmarks. Instructional materials are tailored to meet the needs of diverse learners and are provided by both local and federal Title IA funding.

Decisions for placement within S&I are based on a screening process, which relies on data from district assessments, your child’s report card, and consultation with teachers.    At Franklin Avenue Middle School, this program is conducted in lieu of your child’s elective classes on an every other day basis.   It is our hope and expectation that placement in this supplementary academic program will enable students to develop increased competence and confidence in the identified content area(s). Participating students are progress-monitored and re-evaluated on an ongoing basis with a goal of returning to typical classroom instruction once students demonstrate achievement toward grade-level expectations.

Students With A Goal [SWAG] Math, 6-8

This school year, the Franklin Lakes School District has initiated the FAMS Students With A Goal [SWAG] Mathematics extended day program.  A supplemental program, SWAG Math is specifically designed to meet the needs of those learners who are approaching/ working near grade level expectations for mathematics, but who require additional support to develop:

- positive mathematics identity, self-efficacy, and work habits - including ability to set goals, self-regulate, and take responsibility for mathematics learning and improvement;
- the competence to apply Mathematical Practices - which transcend all mathematics;
- mastery with the major content/ skills of the grade in which he/ she is enrolled.

SWAG math is a fluid support for students which aims to provide supportive instruction in grade level content/ concepts and habits of mind for as long as the student exhibits a need.   As such, participating students participate in self-evaluations, as well as progress-monitoring on an ongoing basis. Ultimately, the goal is for students to ensure that the newly acquired grade level content, concepts, skills and competencies transfer and extend to students’ core mathematics classroom experiences.

FAMS math teachers serve as our SWAG Math instructional staff.  They avail themselves to teach outside of the school day, and every effort is made to place students in sessions in accordance with their availability, but in line with the program’s goal to maintain class sizes that are conducive to small group instruction.

SWAG Math is funded via a federal Every Student Succeeds Act Title IA grant.
